Buy the cheaper bench. In this category the capacity figure that the whole market advertises turns out to be the number with the least behind it, and once you set it aside, the specifications that remain do not reward spending more.
That is the short version and the rest of this page is the evidence, because the reasoning gets you further than the verdict does. It also means you can run the same check on whichever two benches are in front of you.
What 700 lb on a sticker is worth
There is an international standard for this. ISO 20957-4 covers stationary strength training benches and free-standing barbell racks, and it sorts them into three use classes defined in ISO 20957-1: H for domestic use, tested for lower frequency and intensity; S for professional use in gyms, studios and hotels; and I, which meets everything S does at a higher level of accuracy, for sport and rehabilitation settings.
So the class tells you which test regime a bench was held to, and a home-class bench and a studio-class bench printing the same number were not asked the same questions.
Then you go looking for the class, and the trail stops. REP is one of the better-documented makers in this market. Its AB-3100 product page publishes capacity, bench weight, four pad measurements, a pad gap, six back angles and the steel gauge. Its Nighthawk page publishes the same categories. Neither page names an ISO 20957 class, or any safety class at all. The three manufacturer guides ranking for this query do not mention the standard either.
The only standard named anywhere in that set is on the Nighthawk page, where REP states the bench complies with International Powerlifting Federation standards. That is a competition dimension rule about bench height, not a safety class. I could not confirm the figure behind it: the IPF publishes its rulebook as an image PDF that machine reading cannot open, so what I can report is that REP makes the claim and publishes a 16.7-inch height, and not what the rule requires.
Which leaves the capacity number floating. RitFit’s guide quotes benches at 1,300 and 1,600 lb; Keppi’s says at least 500; REP’s says 700 to 1,000. None of the three attaches a test to the figure. I would treat capacity as a filter that removes obvious junk and nothing more, and spend my attention on the specifications the maker does publish.
Two benches, one capacity, $180 apart
Here is what that looks like on real products. Both are REP folding benches, both read on 30 August 2026.

Calculation
The premium is $180, a 67 percent increase over $269.99.
What it buys, from the two published pages: a heavier primary member (7-gauge against 14), 1.25 in more back pad length, one more back angle, a decline seat position, and 1.3 sq ft more footprint.
What it does not buy: any additional capacity. Both benches are rated 700 lb. It also costs you 18 lb more bench, and on a folding bench that is 18 lb you lift onto its end twice a session.
I read that table as an argument for the cheaper one in a flat, and the deciding line is the bench weight rather than the price. If the bench has to stand up in a corner after every session, 70 lb against 88 lb is a difference you meet every time, and a decline seat position is a difference you meet occasionally.
Gauge, and why one number does not describe a frame
The frame row above is the one that changes how you read every other bench page.
Steel gauge runs backwards, so a smaller number is thicker metal. It gets quoted as a single quality marker, “11-gauge” most often, including by REP’s own guide page. Look at what REP publishes: 14- and 4-gauge on one bench and 7- and 14-gauge on the other. Two numbers each, because a bench is not one tube. The uprights, the frame rails and the adjustment ladder do different jobs and are made from different stock, and a single figure has to be hiding which member it describes.
Worth noting how easily this slips even inside one company. REP’s own small-space guide describes the Nighthawk as having an “11-gauge steel frame”. Its product page for the same bench says 7- and 14-gauge. I would take the product page over the guide, and I would take a spec sheet listing gauges per member over any bench that gives one number or none.
Two more things you can check without a tape:
The pad, and its taper. REP publishes the AB-3100’s back pad as 11.75 in wide tapering to 9 in, and the seat pad as 10.5 tapering to 8. Pads taper so your arms clear them at the bottom of a press, which is useful, and it also means the widest figure is not the width under your shoulders. Compare the narrow end, not the headline.
The gap between the pads. “Zero-gap” is a design name rather than a measurement. REP publishes 1.7 in on the AB-3100 and 1.57 in on the Nighthawk, so both have one and one is 8 percent smaller. If you do decline or heavy incline work, that slot is the thing that pinches, and the maker will tell you its size if you look.
Folds flat, stands up, or rolls aside
Three mechanisms hide behind the one word, and they put the bench in three different places.
- Folds flat. The backrest and legs collapse so the bench lies low. The biggest saving, usually the least rigid, and the only one with a shot at going under furniture.
- Stores upright. It does not really fold; it stands on one end against a wall. Most “small space” benches are this, including both REP models above, and it tends to buy a sturdier frame.
- Tilts and rolls. Heavier adjustable benches that pivot onto wheels. Moved, not stowed.
Pick the mechanism for the gap you have, not the other way round: a stand-upright bench is no use if the only free space is under the bed. When the flat bench is the better buy
Three cases overturn the verdict above.
You press heavy and do nothing else. A flat bench has no incline joint, so there is no adjustment mechanism to flex. If your session is bench press and dumbbell rows, adjustability is a feature you are paying for and then not using.
The bench never gets put away. In a spare room or a basement it lives deployed, so every hinge in it is wear with nothing in return. Buy the static version and put the difference into the next item in the purchase order.
You cannot lift the folded weight comfortably. 88 lb onto its end, in a doorway, at the end of a session is a real constraint and not a small one. Check the bench weight before the capacity, because that is the number you handle.
Who buys which
- One-room flat, adjustable dumbbells, bench goes away every time. The cheaper adjustable, and the deciding spec is bench weight.
- Barbell work, corner it can stay in. The heavier frame earns its money here, where you are not lifting it twice a session.
- Rehab, incline and seated accessory work. Pay for the extra angles, including decline, and accept the weight.
- Heavy flat pressing only. A flat bench, not a folding one.
